LaRaza: Declaran al 18 de julio el Día de la Esperanza para los Hogares en Illinois

Organizaciones sin fines de lucro y funcionarios electos de Illinois, el Condado de Cook y la ciudad de Chicago anunciaron el establecimiento, cada 18 de julio, del Día de la Esperanza para los Hogares (Hope for Homes Day), una campaña de donación en línea organizada por La Casa Norte y diseñada para unir a la comunidad en la tarea de abordar y resolver el problema de la falta de vivienda.

Un comunicado de esta iniciativa postuló que en un momento en que otras ciudades están criminalizando la falta de vivienda, en relación a multar a las personas que duermen en la calle, “Illinois se destaca como un faro de esperanza donde organizaciones sin fines de lucro y líderes electos trabajan juntos en soluciones innovadoras”.

Hay más de 68,000 personas sin hogar tan solo en Chicago, según cifras de 2021, con un aumento de 7,985 personas viviendo en las calles o en refugios respecto al año anterior. De aquellos que experimentan la falta de vivienda, el 82% son personas de color.

“Este jueves, 18 de julio, es un día de esperanza, un día para que todos los habitantes de Illinois den un paso adelante y ayuden a resolver la falta de vivienda en nuestro estado”, dijo José Muñoz, CEO de La Casa Norte. “El Día de la Esperanza para los Hogares trata de unirnos para amplificar nuestro impacto, asegurándonos de poder seguir sirviendo y elevando a nuestra comunidad.”

We thank all the attendees and recipients who joined us on December 8th for our Annual Victory Celebration. To commemorate this event we have put together a photo gallery to share with family and friends the successes and joy we have built together this year.

  • Bob Palmer, of Housing Action Illinois, Les Brown Award for Excellence in Public Policy
  • Research Advisory Board Members Heartland Alliance’s Social IMPACT Research Center in recognition of the creation and development of  the TANF Research Project

As we end 2022 Victory Celebration and enter 2023 we look forward to our collaboration with the community working to ensure housing is accessible to everyone. Addressing homelessness has many layers and together we will continue to be tenacious to make housing a human right. 

CCH awards college scholarships to six first-year students, celebrates seven recent graduates

Six Chicago area high school graduates have won a CCH college scholarship to support them in their higher education journeys. They were celebrated at a luncheon with CCH staff, selection committee members, and limited guests on July 28. 

CCH’s annual award of $3,500 is renewable for up to five years as students work to complete a bachelor’s or associate degree. All first-year winners also received new laptops, made possible with a grant from long-time partner, The Osa Foundation.

Twenty undergraduate students will be supported by the CCH college scholarship program during the 2022 – 2023 school year, including six first-years, six sophomores, three juniors, and five seniors. They are attending colleges and universities in California, Illinois, Georgia, Missouri, and Wisconsin, and historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in Georgia and Washington, D.C.
