College scholarship opportunity for homeless & at-risk students

The National Center for Homeless Education is spreading the word about a college scholarship opportunity for homeless, formerly homeless and at-risk students.

For the third year in a row, Give US Your Poor and the Horatio Alger Association are reaching out directly to students who have experienced homelessness to invite them to apply for their scholarship programs. The deadline for applications is October 25, 2012 (by midnight).

The Horatio Alger Association provides scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $20,000. National scholarships are awarded at $20,000. Additional state-specific scholarships are also awarded in various amounts.  

Among other things, eligible applicants must be progressing toward graduation in spring 2013 with plans to enter college in fall 2013; have critical financial need, with $50,000 or less adjusted gross family income preferred; involvement in school and community activies, demonstrated integrity and perseverance and U.S. citizenship.
