1 more week to apply for CCH college scholarship

Next week is the deadline to apply for a $2,000 CCH college scholarship -- student applications, including two references, must be postmarked by Saturday, May 1, 2010. 

Applicants must be seniors graduating from a Chicago Public high school, or a graduating seniors from a suburban school who are past clients of the CCH Law Project. All applicants must have experienced homelessness at some point during high school.

Heading to Springfield: 'Save Our State' rally

Chicago Coalition for the Homeless is ready for Wednesday’s statehouse rally in Springfield – we will join thousands from across Illinois who are expected to turn out to press lawmakers to act now to address the state budget crisis.

CCH supporters run to help the homeless

The Ravenswood 5K is coming up, and CCH supporters are running to raise money for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. The race covers Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood, and takes place on Sunday, April 25.  For the second straight year, the CCH Associate Board is spearheading the effort with participation from CCH staff and Board members as well.

Remembering Les Brown

It is the fifth anniversary of the passing of Les Brown, the founder of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.  Les was my boss from 1995 until the time he died, and I miss him greatly to this day. 

IDHS Director: "With this budget, we are dismantling the social safety net"

Michelle Saddler, a former long-time CCH Board President, met this month with the CCH board to discuss the draconian impact of the FY 2011 state budget, if the plan now on the table is adopted later this spring.

As Secretary of the Illinois Department of Human Services, Ms. Saddler understands, in detail, the devastating consequences of allowing the state's fiscal crisis to continue without an overhaul, including an income tax increase.

Women's group takes in DuSable's "Freedom Sisters" exhibit

Women's organizer Dollie Brewer recently brought 10 of her leaders from Deborah's Place to experience the "Freedom Sisters" exhibit at the DuSable Museum of African American History. The traveling exhibit closes this Easter Sunday, April 4.

It's a wonderful exhibit about 20 African American women who helped make history. They include women such as Fannie Lou Hamer, who became a leader in the voting rights struggle in the South during the 1960s. 

HUD study: Permanent housing costs the same or less than shelter services

As reported this week in USA Today, a new HUD study demonstrates it can cost the same or less to house someone in permanent housing with services as it does to provide those services in homeless shelters.
